High School Course Selection

Deciding which classes to take in high school can be a daunting task. As the college admissions process looms closer and closer, you might start to worry that your course schedule will make or break your chances of getting into that perfect college.

However, it is always important to keep in mind that no one class can single-handedly change the course of the admissions process.

Colleges view your application as a whole, and performing poorly in one class (that maybe you shouldn’t have taken) will not be the end-all be-all of your high school career!

Of course, it’s still important to choose your high school classes wisely, and our staff works with each student one-on-one to select courses based on a few different factors. First and foremost, we consider your own level of interest in the subject and how willing you’ll be to work towards a good grade in the class. The classes your friends are taking or your parents advise you to take shouldn’t be of predominant importance; you know better than anyone else how you will perform. If you love English, challenge yourself to take advanced English courses, such as AP English Literature and AP English Language, and work hard to perform well in them. Colleges like to see strength of interest and passion in prospective students, so it’s important to show continuity and — if you’re interested in a subject — to choose as many courses that subject if you can.

But to really boost your chances of admission, we work closely with all our students to select courses that will meet the advanced placement requirements of their preferred college or university. In doing so, we make sure to consider is the level of difficulty in your course load for any given year. It is extremely important to ensure that you choose classes challenging enough to show schools that you are prepared for the kind of hard work that college will demand. Better not to take too many AP courses and do poorly in them, but make sure that if your school offers AP courses, you take a few each year that you’re interested in and will succeed in. A’s in AP courses speak volumes to your commitment to hard work, and combined with some strong extracurricular activities and a track record of leadership, we’re confident we can find a course schedule that will put you well on your way to the school of your dreams.
